Born January 16, 1932 in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late George O. and Beulah M. (Lum) Hammersla.
He was a 1949 graduate of Martinsburg High School, and a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. He was employed as a design engineer by the DuPont Potomac River Works plant at Falling Waters from 1955 until retiring in 1990.
He was a lifelong member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and a teacher of the Men’s Bible Sunday School Class there for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary (McDaniel) Hammersla, whom he married on September 23, 1960; three sons, Wayne (Denise), Keith, and Mark (Lora); one daughter, Jill Cathey (Ted); five grandchildren, Megan, Kaitlin Jadlowski (Joey), Jessica Bewley (John), Zachary, and Emma Cathey; one brother, George Elvin Hammersla; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Arnold Lee Hammersla; a half-sister, Julia Belle “Judy” (Hammersla) Snyder Terlson; a sister, Belva May (Hammersla) Tabler; a step-sister, Patricia (Phillips) Rock Schaeffer; and a step-mother, Opal (Montgomery) Phillips Hammersla.
A celebration of Harold’s life will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 2pm
at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, at 549 N. Queen Street in Martinsburg. The family will receive friends and family at the church starting one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Otterbein United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2378, Martinsburg, WV 25402, or the Martinsburg Union Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 843, Martinsburg, WV 25402.
