Michael Allen Sawyers I, “Poppy” was born February 20th, 1952 in Danville Virginia to Rush Anderson Sawyers and Ila Faye Bedsaul Sawyers. He died peacefully at home on September 24, 2024 in Grovetown, GA. He was surrounded by wife Beverly and friends as he peacefully ascended upon Heaven’s gate.
Michael served 20 years in the United States Army where he specialized in aviation electrical repair and retired a proud SSG E7. After retirement he worked several jobs around the Augusta, Ga. area until he fully retired some years later. When he wasn’t busy hiding snicky snacks around the yard for the dogs and the squirrels, he enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time with friends and his animals. Michael was known as the sweetest man alive with the most generous heart to those he cared about the most. Beloved husband, father, and friend. Michael will be missed by many. As he would always say, “see ya later alligator”!
In addition to his parents, Mr. Sawyers is preceded in death by his brother, Gwynn Higgins of Galaz, VA. Survivors include in addition to his wife, Mr. Sawyers leaves behind his sons, Michael Sawyers II (wife Cathy) of New Kent, Va., Jeremy Sawyers of Evansville, In; Daughters, Rachel Sawyers of Milwaukee, WI, Kimberly “Kimski” Powell of Grovetown, GA.; bonus daughter Sara Hachney of Wrens, GA; Grandchildren, Alexis, Trevor, Alanna, Michael III, Hope, Kaleigh, Collin, Kalianna, Bryce, Bentley, and Ryder; Brothers, Rush Sawyers Jr. of Woodlawn, VA, Sandra Tanner of Poplar Bluff , MO, Debbie Barns of Zebulon, NC, Myrna Lynn Keller of Ft. Belford, VA; and His beloved dog, Buddy; cat Zipper; and nieces, nephews, and friends who loved him dearly.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held 11 am, Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, 4255 Columbia Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907.
