Peggy Faustine Reed entered the Kingdom of Heaven on October 9, 2024. She was 94 years old. Peggy was living in The Woodlands, Texas near her children at the time of her death. She was a long-time resident of Falls County, retiring there to the Reed Farm in 1981.
Peggy was born on November 4, 1929 to Willie “Buck” and Dora Fisher Herron in Van Zandt County, Texas. She grew up in her father’s East Texas tomato fields before moving to Dallas with her family at the age of 12. She graduated from Adamson High School in 1947.
On March 5, 1953, Peggy married Richard Allen “Red” Reed in Richmond, Texas. Their courtship was brief, having only one date the night before their wedding. They remained married and in love until Red’s death in 1986. Peggy and Red raised their three beloved children, Rickey David, Vicky Shannon, and Becky Minnell in Houston, Texas.
In 1981 Peggy retired from AT&T after 35 years of service. She was proud of her years with “the phone company”. During her employment she held various positions. She was proud to be one of the first women at AT&T to be allowed to dispatch repair trucks, a job held only by men for many years.
In her retirement Peggy enjoyed traveling, quilting, and volunteering. She would often say that as a child she never dreamed she would get to travel beyond Dallas County. Her travels took her to England several times, Scotland, Switzerland, The Czech Republic, France, and throughout the United States. In 1990 Peggy and three other ladies from Marlin set out on a six-week trip to Alaska and Canada. She loved to tell stories of this trip with her friends, Maud Philp, Vivian Wasserman, and Hazel Honeycutt. Each of these dear friends proceeded Peggy in death, but her memories of them and their trip lived on.
Peggy was also an avid quilter, making over 30 quilts for family, friends, and herself. The beauty of her craftsmanship will be admired and cherished for many years by those fortunate enough to have received one of her quilts.
Peggy spent 17 years on the Texas Water and Soil Conservation Board representing her area of Falls County. Her favorite part of being on the board was traveling around the state to annual meetings. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Marlin where she enjoyed volunteering for various activities.
Peggy was proceeded in death by her father Buck, her mother Dora, brother Clenton Herron and his wife Barbara, husband Red, and daughter Shannon. She is survived by her children Rickey and Becky, son-in-law Tim, niece Deena Herron, and nephew Blaine Herron.
The family would like to thank Vince and Kim Margiotta, and Mike and Sandra Box for their many years of friendship and always being available to help Peggy.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 15th from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Adam’s Funeral Home in Marlin, Texas. A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Cemetery on Wednesday, October 16th at 10:00am. Officiants will be Pastor Kurt Rutz of Grace Lutheran Church, and Minister Timothy Lloyd.
