February 17, 1934 - September 20, 2018
Mary Lynn Adam Powell, 84, passed away suddenly Thursday,
September 20, 2018. A private graveside service for Mary Lynn
was held Sunday, September 23, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Calvary
Cemetery, Fortune Street, Marlin, Texas 76661.
A memorial service for Mary Lynn will be held on Saturday,
October 20, 2018 at 3:30pm at First United Methodist Church in
Marlin, where she was an active member for many years.
Mary Lynn was born Feb 17, 1934, in Marlin, to John Adam and
his wife Mary Frances (Johns) Adam. Mary Lynn was the first of two children and cherished as
the only daughter. Mary Lynn’s brother John David Adam completed the family, all who were
very close and struggled through the Depression years together in Marlin. During WWII years,
Mary Lynn would accompany her mother on delivery rounds of the Marlin Democrat, while her
father was in the Armed Forces.
After graduating from Marlin High School, Mary Lynn went on to college, graduating from
Texas Women’s College. Her first job was with Dow Chemical, of which she thought fondly
until her death. She took a leave of absence from Dow and toured Europe over several months in
her twenties. It sparked her love of travel which she continued in later years with her Aunt Mary
Ann (Adam) Bancroft as well as several other good friends. Even though traveling and living
away from Marlin, she always cherished her Marlin roots..
Mary Lynn moved back to Marlin about 1990 and participated in the many civic and social
groups afforded by the community. She also loved being close to her mother (& BFF!) Mary
Frances and brother John David Adam.
Active in many of Marlin social outlets, Mary Lynn enjoyed the United Methodist Women’s
“Wesleyan Circle” and the First United Methodist Church of Marlin. Indulging in the gardening
genes she inherited from her Haug ancestors was exhibited in her activities with the Community
Garden Club and the Cen-Tex Orchid Society, both of which she was a member for many years.
Mary Lynn loved friendly competition and vied with members of the Marlin “Saturday Night 42
Club.” She even kept ancient score cards from playing cards with her brother.
No matter what Mary Lynn was into at a particular time of her life, she went into it whole
“Haug.” With Dow Chemical Mary Lynn took classes to understand the Petroleum Industry. As
a real estate agent, she became a Master Saleswoman. And as an antique dealer Mary Lynn loved
the back-&-forth of haggling, not to mention estate sales and auctions. In her last few years
Mary Lynn loved her “shiny penny” shopping sprees and visits with the Walmart crew which
helped her to her car and worried about her. Just one example of the kindness of community that
is Marlin.
People who knew Mary Lynn and even those who did not remarked on her ready smile for
everyone. She was physically tiny but a bundle of might. She could argue with the best of them
(her brother John David) and stood side-by-side with her two nieces Michelle and Laurie to win
the family debate with their dad. Other people remarked on her absolute stylishness whenever
she was out and about Marlin. Mary Lynn was devoted to family, her friends, and her
community of Marlin.
Mary Lynn was preceded in death by her parents John and Mary Frances (Johns) Adam, her
brother John David Adam, her sister-in-law Patsy Janine (Gillespie) Adam, and her husband
Welton Prentiss Powell.
Mary Lynn is survived by two nieces and their husbands: Michelle and Tim Angel and Laurie
and John Hitzel, their seven children Ryan (Stefanie) Reese, Timmy Angel, Madison Angel, and
Savannah, Alexandra, Johnnie and Geneva Hitzel, as well as three great-great nieces and
nephews: Athena and William Hitzel and Lily Reese.
Additionally, Mary Lynn is survived by her first cousins Milanne Bancroft of Oak Park IL,
Charles Russell Bancroft of Houston, Kay Lynn Bancroft Harris (Dale) of San Francisco, CA,
Sammie Dinhoble and James (Kathryn) Eskridge.
In lieu of flowers, Mary Lynn’s family would love that you donate in her memory to either the
Building Fund of Zion Rock Baptist Church of Highbank Texas or to the First United Methodist
Church of Marlin, Texas.
