Samuel Dean Swann, 75, of Spruce Pine, NC, passed away on Monday, January 1, 2018, at Blue Ridge Regional Hospital in Spruce Pine, surrounded by his loving wife and family.
Mr. Swann was born on September 28, 1942, in McDowell County, to the late Clarence Arnold Swann and Effie Boone Swann.
He was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church in Spruce Pine and served as a Deacon.
He served our country proudly in the United States Airforce for fourteen years, and he served in the US Army for eleven years. He loved the brothers and sisters he served with in the 211th MP Company and kept in touch with many of them over the years. After retiring from the military, Mr. Swann was a mechanic and worked as a service manager for Spruce Pine Chevrolet, Spruce Pine Ford and Carolina Tire.
Mr. Swann was a very loving and outgoing person. He had a magnetic personality and he loved talking with people. He had a “Pen Ministry” for the past six years. He wore a big, beautiful smile everyday and would hand out his pens that were engraved with the message “Jesus Loves You”.
Surviving Mr. Swann are his wife of 53 years, Annie Marie Porras Swann; a son, Bill (Michelle) Swann, of Bakersville; daughters, Terri (Allen) Hughes, of Spruce Pine, and Starla Fox of Marion; grandchildren, Kayla and Kyle Ponder, Jessica (Josh) Laws, Dustin and Colton Swann; and great-grandchildren Baylee Tipton and Gabe Laws, who were very dear to his heart.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, January 4, 2018 at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion. A Funeral Service will be held following the visitation at 7:00 PM, with Pastor Brandon Pittman officiating. Burial will be at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Blk. Mtn., NC at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2018 with full military honors.
