Peter William Matthews, 89, formerly of Old Fort, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at his residence, in Denver, NC, surrounded by his loving family.
Mr. Matthews was born in Putnam Co. GA, on March 3, 1928, to the late Turner Williams and Annie Farley.
He was a member of Catawba View Missionary Baptist Church in Old Fort, where he served as a Deacon. Mr. Matthews also served as an Alderman for the Town of Old Fort for 16 years. He worked as a machinist and could fix anything. He was a jack of all trades. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed landscaping and gardening in his yard. He volunteered with the Forest Service for many years, and back in the day, you could find him at the movie theatres in Old Fort and Black Mtn. operating the movie projectors.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Matthews was preceded in death by his wife, Lillie Mae Logan Matthews; and by the mother who raised him, Sarah Matthews; a son, William Calvin Matthews; brothers, Willie C. Matthews, James Fleet Williams, Daniel Williams and Rubin Williams; sisters, Mattie Lawrence and Mary “Baba” Maddox.
Surviving Mr. Matthews are his son, Bennie (Hilda) Matthews, of Denver, NC; daughters, Aritha Renee (Harold) Graves, of Los Angeles, CA, Deborah (Phillip) Smith, of Charlotte, NC, and Barbara Jean Matthews, of Los Angeles, CA.; sisters, Carrie Clip Ussery of Lawndale, NC and Annie H. Maddox of Hickory, NC; brother, James Odis (Barbara) Maddox, of Shelby; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2017, at 12:00 PM at Catawba View Missionary Baptist Church, in Old Fort. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. Burial will follow the service at Old Fort City Cemetery.
