Gertrude Marie Austin Hughes

She was born January 18, 1922 in McDowell County, NC to the late Lafayette M. Austin and Gertrude Nesbitt Austin. Mrs. Hughes attended Catawba Heights Baptist Church. She had a love of music and enjoyed singing. One of her favorite pastimes was riding in boats on the lake.

In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, John Hughes; one son, Freddie Taylor; one daughter, Gloria Jennings; one grandson, Kenneth Hughes; and one step-son, Joe Hughes.

Surviving Mrs. Hughes are one son, Donald Taylor of Sylva; four daughters, Ann Lonon (Roy) of Morganton, Joan Patrick of Marion, Katherine Hughes of Nebo, Mary Carson (Stacey) of Marion ; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

A Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Thursday, May 14, 2015 in McCall Memorial Chapel at Kirksey Funeral Home in Marion with Rev. Dean Owenby officiating. Entombment will follow at McDowell Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
