He was born in Townville, South Carolina on February 18, 1927 to James Haskell Holliday and Annie Crawford Holliday. He and his twin brother Ray were the youngest of four children. Roy attended Boys’ High and Anderson College in Anderson, S.C.
A morning newspaper route blossomed into a career in Circulation at numerous newspapers across the southeast including The Greenville News, the fledgling Athens Daily News, The Marietta Daily Journal and The North Fulton Today from its inception, The Rome News Tribune, ending his career with Morris Newspapers as Circulation Director.
After meeting his beloved wife of 68 years, Jewel Francis Bridges in Greenville, S.C, they were married on April 1, 1950, in Anderson, South Carolina and remained together until her passing on October 7, 2018.
Most recently, Roy and Jewel made their home in Moultrie, Georgia to be close to their loving family. Roy was a resident of Magnolia Manor South Assisted Living in Moultrie for seven years where he made many close friends. He often wrote stories and poems that delighted all. He had an easy sense of humor and was quick-witted and affable to the age of 97.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife Jewel Bridges Holliday, his parents, two sisters, Margaret Holcombe (and brother-in-law Walter Holcombe) and Harriett Sligh (and brother-in-law Frank Sligh) and his twin brother James Ray Holliday (and sister-in-law Mildred Holliday).
Roy leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Paul Griffin in Valdosta, Ga; grandchildren, Jenny and Clay Dell and great grandchildren, Lilly and Parker Dell in Boston, Ga; and grandchildren Laura and Matthew House and great grandchildren Wesley and Abby House in Santa Cruz, Ca.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23 at 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of H.M. Patterson & Son—Canton Hill Chapel, in Marietta, Georgia. The family will receive guests at 10:30 prior to the service. Interment will follow in Floyd Memory Gardens, in Rome, Georgia.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to Magnolia Manor League of The Good Samaritan, Americus Georgia.
