Dick Butterfield, 79, grew up in Montclair, NJ, where he attended Rand Elementary School, George Inness Jr. High School and Montclair High School.
He was involved in sports during his elementary and junior high school years, but it was not until high school that he developed into a good football player as a tackle, particularly on offense.
In his senior year, he blossomed into an excellent tackle on a great offensive unit, which paced Montclair to a 9-0 record and the overall New Jersey state championship. Dick was named to the All-Essex County first team and earned a scholarship to Penn State, where he was a four-year member of the football team.
After college, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps, and was an infantry officer, serving in Vietnam.
Upon his discharge, Dick returned to Montclair, but wound up in Atlanta, Ga., where he spent most of his adult life.
He was predeceased by his parents and three sisters.
