Jeannette “Sue” Long Sturniolo, age 88 of Canton, Georgia passed away on May 7, 2024. She is survived by husband Joseph Sturniolo, Jr., son Joseph Sturniolo, III (Kay) of Atlanta, son Steve Sturniolo (Renee) of Marietta, daughter Jaye Cannon (Kevin) of Marietta, son-in-law David Bish, and her brother, David. She was preceded in death by her daughter Debra Bish, parents Clarence and Laura Long and brothers Ronald and Larry Long. She is survived by Grandchildren: Katie Cruce (Bryan) of Atlanta, AJ Wilson (Matt) of Cartersville, Chris Crapps (Duffy) of Canton, Andrew Sturniolo (Amy) of Woodstock, Nichole Deaton (Kenny) of Cartersville, Jessica Cannon (Martin) of Marietta, and Jennifer Hampton (Brandon) of Summerville, as well as fourteen Great Grandchildren.
Sue was born in Salem, NJ. She received her nursing degree Jefferson Medical in Philadelphia and practiced as a surgical nurse in Philadelphia. While in school she met Joe, her future husband. They married, started a family and began their journey together for nearly 70 years. Sue focused on raising her sons and daughters while Joe’s business took them across the United States with stops in Massachusetts, Indiana, California and finally in Marietta, Georgia. The family settled in East Cobb County and put down roots in that community.
Sue discovered a new career by serving as a volunteer nurse and administrator at Walton High School in 1975. Growing up with three brothers prepared her for doling out “tough love” to high school teenagers. Her fierce but fair nature and outgoing people skills with attention to detail suited her role remarkedly well at the high school. School administrators soon recognized her value and requested that she come onboard full time, staying at the school for 28 years. She immersed herself into the Walton community and especially enjoyed attending Walton Raider athletic events. She was an avid Braves fan and supported them through the lean years and was thrilled to see a World Championship team in 2021.
As an empty nester, Sue looked for interests outside of the family and volunteered with The Ronald McDonald House.
As the family expanded into four generations, Sue always made certain the extended family had a place to gather at hers and Joe’s home in East Cobb. The dining room was converted to a play room for the young grandchildren, the home office became a video arcade for the older kids, and the big yard became a prime location for Easter Egg Hunts and July 4th festivities. She always obliged the request by all the family members that her deviled eggs and potato salad be present at every single holiday.
Her steadying, vibrant personality will be missed by all.
The family will receive guest from 3 pm until 5 pm at HM Patterson and Son Canton Hill Chapel Funeral Home on Saturday, May 11th.
