Jeanne Marie (Brady) Murphy, of Marietta, GA passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 101 on November 20, 2023. She was born in the Bronx, New York on March 30, 1922, to Gladys Margaret and Alfred Raymond Brady.
Jeanne graduated from Tolentine High School in the Bronx in 1940 and from Lenox Hill Nursing School in 1943. She subsequently joined the United States Navy and was stationed at the Naval Hospital in Dublin, Georgia where she served as the operating room head nurse. After the war, she worked as a nurse for Julius Lempert, MD, a world-renowned creator of revolutionary surgical procedures for the hearing impaired.
On home leave from the Navy, Jeanne was reacquainted with John Murphy, a high school friend, at the neighborhood watering hole Finnerty’s. John, already discharged from the Army Air Force, was now a New York City policeman. Friendship quickly grew into love, and they were married in 1947. In 1951, John re-enlisted in the Air Force and they embarked on a military career that took them to Alaska, El Paso, Savannah, Omaha, Guam, Washington DC and California. Jeanne and John were blessed with six children. Jeanne pursued her love of caring for others when she briefly returned to nursing in the obstetrics department at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha NE in 1964 and by volunteering to nurse injured soldiers at Andersen AFB on Guam on their return from Vietnam.
Upon retirement, they moved to Dunnellon Florida where they built their dream home. After John’s death in 1993, Jeanne returned to Alexandria, Virginia, where she filled her time enjoying her six children, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Jeanne spent her final years in Marietta at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
Jeanne was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother as well as a beloved sister and aunt. She was a master at the New York Times crossword puzzle; she enjoyed playing golf, and was especially noted for her sewing skills. Her creations were works of detail that are still treasured by her family and handed down from generation to generation. A devout Roman Catholic, her faith was an essential element of her life. She has left her family a beautiful legacy of deep faith and abiding love.
Known as Baba to her large, extended family, Jeanne was the celebrated matriarch of the clan. Her 90th, 95th, and 100th birthday celebrations were both joyful and legendary!
Jeanne is preceded in death by her husband, John, her sister Betty and her son Philip. She is survived by her brother, Alfred R. Brady (Carol), and her sister, Margaret Edwards, and her children, Patricia, John (Kathleen), Mary Beth (Richard), Michael (Nadia) and Ann Marie (James), as well as her cherished 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Jeanne’s life will be celebrated at a funeral Mass at St Ann’s Catholic Church in Marietta on December 12, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. Donations may be made in Jeanne’s name to MUST Ministries by visiting https://www.mustministries.org/.
