Harry was born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 2, 1943, to his mother, Marjorie, and father, Harry Hammond, Sr. His family moved to Atlanta, Georgia soon thereafter, where he grew up, worked as a paper boy, and graduated from Grady High School in 1961. He went on to graduate from Georgia State University where he was president of his fraternity, Sigma Nu.
After graduation, 2nd Lt. Hammond served two years in active duty as a tank commander and instructor in the United States Army at Fort Benning, Georgia. Upon his discharge from the Army, he began a long, successful career in Greater Atlanta real estate. On November 11, 1973, his sister, Cindy, introduced him to a coworker, Janie Lawson. The two quickly realized their love for each other and were married on June 22, 1974. They welcomed daughters Laura and Beth to complete their family.
Harry was a longtime member of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, elder, and Sunday school teacher. He participated in many Bible studies throughout his adult life. His faith in Jesus was evident to anyone who had a conversation with him. He was known for his great sense of humor; his loyalty to his family, friends, church, and career; and his reasoning and logic. He was an astute businessman who, through many years of diligent work, grew his thriving real estate company.
Harry is preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Dick Sturm. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janie; daughters, Laura (Kevin) Conrad and Beth (Chris) Allison; grandchildren, Abby, Connor, and Amelia; sister, Cindy (Robert) Smith and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at 10:00a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Right from the Heart Ministries or Chosen Children’s Ministry.
