Doreen Campbell Scott, 82, passed peacefully on July 30, 2017, following a stroke. Doreen was born March 13, 1935 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Doreen was the fourth of five siblings and immigrated to the U.S. in 1954 to live with her sister. On New Year’s Eve that year, Doreen went with friends to a party and a handsome fellow asked her for a dance. That was the start of a 60-year romance with Jim Scott whom she wed on September 3, 1955.
Doreen began working for Spaulding Sporting Goods while Jim studied, earning his Master’s degree in Business Administration. Doreen supported Jim in his career in the supermarket business, moving from western Massachusetts to Greensburg, Pennsylvania and other parts of the northeast. Doreen accompanied Jim on many trips across the US and overseas as they attended industry trade shows and award trips.
As they raised two daughters, Doreen went back to school to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from California University of Pennsylvania. She was an exceptional substitute teacher for several years, but put most of her energy into raising her girls, taking them to ballet and piano lessons, swim team, girls scouts and encouraging them in all they chose to do.
Doreen was an avid bridge player and together with Jim became a Life Master. She made many friends in the bridge world and loved to play in tournaments. After Jim ‘retired’, they began a new venture in the discount book business. Doreen’s lifelong passion for books supported a successful run in the Buffalo, NY area. In 2001, they moved to Sarasota, FL enjoying golf, the beach and visits from the kids and grandkids. Doreen loved cooking, entertaining, and making each of their homes beautiful and cozy. In 2012, they moved to Atlanta, GA to an assisted living facility near their daughter Cheryl.
Doreen had a quick wit, a kind heart toward everyone she met, and a generous spirit. She didn’t let her Parkinson’s slow her down, staying active in Sunday school at Mt. Bethel, attending concerts, and enjoying many activities at her assisted living facility – including giving bridge lessons to several residents.
Doreen is survived by her daughter Cheryl Lyn King and her husband Thomas Howard King, daughter Kimberly Scott and her husband Robert James Seman, grandchildren Brian Thomas King, Matthew James King, Zachary Robert Seman, Aaron James Scott, great-grandson Zachary Robert Ahmed Seman, niece Karen Krygowski Bruno, and nephew James Campbell.
Doreen is preceded in death by her husband James Edward Scott, parents James and Annie (McIlhare) Campbell, sisters Gwen LaFountain, Jane Drane, Iris Krygowski and brother James Campbell.
A celebration of life celebration will be held on August 1, at 1:30 pm, at Sandy Springs Place, 1260 Hightower Trail, Atlanta, GA 30350. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
