Charles Mundy Edwards III

Surrounded by family at his home in Marietta, GA, Charles Mundy Edwards, III (83) was holding his wife of 52 years, Janice P. Edwards, when he took his last breath. Charlie went to be with his father in heaven on November 15, 2018 after a nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Born in New York City on January 30, 1935, to Nancy Rawls Edwards and Charles Mundy Edwards, Jr. He moved to Summit, NJ at age two and attended public schools and Summit United Methodist Church before attending Princeton University.

After graduating “cum laude” from Princeton, Charlie reported to Marine Corps Platoon Leader Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia as a 2nd Lieutenant. He then served at Camp Pendleton in California as a 1st Lieutenant. After two years of active duty, Charlie decided to move back to New York and make his mark on Wall Street.

Charlie became a partner at Shearson Hammill at age 31 and retired in 1985 at age 50 as Senior Vice President in charge of the Corporate Finance Department at Shearson Lehman/American Express. Charlie was active with his nephew Andrew C. Edwards in the restaurant industry (Crazy Charlie’s, 1986-2009), as well as in real estate and property management. Charlie was listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry, and Who’s Who in the World.

Charlie was a faithful servant and volunteer at the United Methodist Church in Summit, NJ, beginning in his early teens. For his many contributions the UMC of Summit renamed the music room: “The Edwards Music Room”. Charlie served on the Summit Planning Board, served as president and treasurer of the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Youth through the Archdiocese of Newark, NJ., and was a trustee of Summit Family Service Association. For fun, he served as President of Beacon Hill Club in Summit.

After moving to Marietta, Georgia in 1995, Charlie and Janice joined Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church. Charlie served on the Administrative Council and as a volunteer for the Older Adult Ministry (now called “Aloha to Aging”). He also taught Sunday school in the Contemporary Class where he served as its president for three years. He wrote a history of Mt. Bethel which is sold in its bookstore, was a Legacy Board member of “Faith Bridge Foster Care,” and chaired the creation of the 1840 Society and the Endowment Fund of Mt Bethel UMC. For many years, Charlie was a Stephen Minister and, in this capacity, he had four care receivers who became cherished friends. He also mentored disadvantaged youth through “Opportunity Knocks for Youth” and taught bridge lessons to Mt. Bethel members. There was never enough for Charlie to do.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice P. Edwards, daughter Melanie E. Furr and husband Mark, daughter Meghan E. Bishop and husband Adam, as well as three grandchildren Elise (17), Ethan (15), Zoey (6), and his brother, Richard F. Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church 4385 Lower Roswell Road on December 14 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Mt. Bethel UMC for the Charles M. Edwards, III Memorial Fund

Funds will then be distributed to Aloha to Aging and Opportunity Knocks for Youth.
