August Joseph (Gus) Tramonte passed into eternal life on March 5, 2018 at the age of 96.
Gus was born on December 7, 1921 to James G. Tramonte and Mary Lapino Tramonte, both Sicilian immigrants, in Kenner, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. As a child of the depression, Gus learned at a very early age to be resourceful, particularly after the death of his mother when he was only 8 years old. His childhood was spent going to school and helping in the family store. He played football at Kenner High School back in the day when the offense and the defense were indistinguishable. He also learned how to play the saxophone.
Answering the call to patriotism, Gus enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. After boot camp at Camp Pendleton, CA, he was stationed in the Pacific, serving at Guadalcanal and Bougainville. After being honorably discharged, he resumed civilian life, where he entered Soule Business College in New Orleans and continued his musical hobby as a member of the Melody Lads. It was during his many Saturday night performances that he met, and fell in love with, the love of his life, Genevieve (Jean) Tardiff. They were married in 1949, until Jean’s death in 2017, after over 67 years of marriage. Their one son James was born in 1951.
After business college Gus started his career with the Progressive Bank and Trust Company in New Orleans, which through the years has now become part of Chase Bank. While the world of bank reorganizations swirled around him, Gus was a constant anchor in the correspondent banking department to his customers. He was so valued, rumor has it that his voice mail is still active, with others still returning his calls.
He was a founding parishioner of St. Matthew the Apostle Catholic Church in River Ridge, Louisiana and spent many hours in service to his fellow man. He was recognized for his service in the parish and the archdiocese by then Archbishop Phillip Hannan with the Order of St. Louis for the Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Upon relocating to Atlanta in 1990 to be with “his grandchildren” Gus became an active presence at the Catholic Church of St. Ann in Marietta, as a sacristan, lector, Meals on Wheels volunteer, and member of the Knights of Columbus.
Gus was preceded in death by Jean, by his brother, Anthony R. Tramonte, Sr., and his sister, Marie Tramonte Catalano, and by his great grandson, Noah August Tramonte.
He is survived by his son, Deacon James Albert Tramonte (Stephanie), and five grandchildren: James Albert (Amanda) Tramonte, Jr, Karen Tramonte (Christopher) Kovacs, David August (Robyn) Tramonte, Patrick Thomas (Sarah) Tramonte, and Mark Joseph (Caroline) Tramonte, and 15 surviving great grandchildren, with three more on the way.
