On behalf of my wife Ingrid, sisters-in-law Elizabeth and Kate, Aunt Bonnie Williams and mother-in-law Nina Van Wormer, I am writing with the profoundly sorrowful news that David Van Wormer passed away over the weekend, from a severe infection that was complicated by his years of diabetes. He passed his final days peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
David was a life-long enthusiast of the arts and of all forms of individual sports. His life accomplishments including leading the physical education program for 23 years as a founding partner of the University Rafael Urdaneta in Maraciabo, Venezuela.. A passionate teacher, he was at the forefront of the movement to bring education of fitness to youths in Venezuela and in particular to young women. In no place was his dedication more focused than in his three daughters, all of whom he taught to be competitive swimmers and athletes while growing up in Maracaibo. He also shared with them his great love of the outdoors during countless camping trips across North and South America.
I will miss David very much, for his passion for photography, art, music, travel, cycling, squash and swimming (just to name a few things!) that he so lovingly shared with his family and friends. But more than anything I will miss his great humanity -- the caring he felt for all people, and for the world we live. While I may not have always agreed with his political opinions, I always respected them because I knew they were based in his deep-felt love for others. You will always be in our hearts, David.
David is survived by his wife Ingrid, daughter Ingrid, Elizabeth and Kate, grandchildren Michael, Ana, Isabella, Sabrina, Louisa, Marcela, Anthony and Nicholas (coming soon!), and sister Bonnie Williams.
David will be buried today at Kraeer Funeral home in Margate, Florida. The viewing starts at 1 pm, graveside service at 3 pm. Apologies for the pathetically late notice on my part... Please send any condolences to his widow and wife of 47 years, Nina Van Wormer, at:
