He was the husband of the late Martha H. (Wilkins) Cornell.
Born in Danbury, Conn., he was the son of the late Henry G. and Ada Mae (Fish) Cornell. He received a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Conn., and lived in Marblehead for most of his life.
For 39 years he was a mechanical engineer at the G.E. River Works Plant in Lynn and retired in 1990. His expertise was in hydraulic fuel controls. He held 7 patents, mostly relating to the J85 engine, projected to be in use until 2040. He was also a member of the Elfun Society.
For many years he was a member of the Corinthian Yacht Club, winning trophies during the summer for DaySailer and Corinthian classes. He especially enjoyed Race Week. In the winter, he enjoyed skiing. He was also a member of the American Amateur Sports Car Assn., racing his 1953 MG TD at Watkins Glen, NY and participating in hill climbs at Mt. Washington. In his later years he was an avid golfer.
He was the father of Ellen M. Culp and her husband Steven of Everett and Charles R. Cornell and his partner Colin J. Warnock of Hoboken, NJ, the grandfather of Matthew Culp and Lauren Culp both of Everett, and the beloved companion of Susan Bradbury of Peabody. He was also the brother of the late Janice Johnson.
His funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 8th at 11AM in the Eustis & Cornell Funeral Home 142 Elm Street, Marblehead. Burial in Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Visiting hours will be Monday, April 7th from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assn., 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
