A 5th generation Marbleheader, Mike was born at the former Mary A. Alley Hospital. He was the son of the late Pauline (Welch) Bateman and Arthur Flachbart. He was a standout baseball and football player at Marblehead High School and graduated in the Class of 1957.
Following high school, he attended Newman Preparatory School and graduated from Wentworth Institute. He was a member of the Marblehead Jaycees and was employed in Sales at Johns Manville Products before starting and operating his own Marblehead-based business, Kenneth Industries - Industrial Products Division. Mike enjoyed coaching Marblehead Little League Youth Baseball for many years and cheering on his children and grandchildren at sporting events.
Mike was elected to the Marblehead Electric Light Commission and served in this position from 1978-1981. He was a 15-year member of Tedesco Country Club and one of his greatest passions in life was the game of golf. Mike was an active member of the Gerry and was a longtime member of the former Marblehead Elks Lodge, where he could be found throwing horseshoes or trading stories while the kids were in the pool.
He is survived by his wife Mary-Ann Flachbart of Marblehead, his son Michael A. Flachbart and his wife Robin of Huntsville, Alabama, his daughter Karen Picariello and her husband Robert of Marblehead, and his daughter Amy Carnevale and her husband Thomas of Marblehead. Mike was the proud grandfather of Elizabeth Flachbart, Taylor and Owen Picariello, and Cameron Carnevale. Mike was preceded in death by his sister, Paula L. Flachbart, and his brother, James Bateman.
The family will welcome visitors on Wednesday, May 19, at Eustis and Cornell Funeral Home, 142 Elm Street, Marblehead from 4-8 p.m. A service will take place on Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. at Eustis and Cornell followed by a burial at Waterside Cemetery, Marblehead. Donations in Mr. Flachbart's memory may be made to Marblehead Youth Baseball, PO Box 555, Marblehead, MA 01945, or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).
