Mary "Mickey" Michael Hampton

After a long life full of love and happiness, Mary “Mickey” Hampton passed away on July 20, 2018. Born in Midland, TX on March 21, 1949, Mickey spent most of her life in San Antonio, TX. She graduated from McCullum High School in 1967 and went on to be feature twirler at the University of Texas at Arlington, where she met her husband of 44 years, Wayne. After graduating, they built a rich life, filled with family, friends, the lake, travel, church, and eventually their daughters.

Mickey worked her way up in human resources at Kelly, later Lackland Air Force Base where she used her excellent leadership skills and was a force to be reckoned with. Following her retirement from the Air Force as a civilian, she then worked for the City of San Antonio in Human Resources Management. She spent her evenings growing the art of baton twirling, first as a teacher and judge, and later as a mom, supporting her daughters in practice and competitions.

Mickey spent her life supporting and encouraging young people. With her never-ending positivity, she was a cheerleader not only for her children, but for everyone she met. Whether in her early and brief career as an elementary school teacher, as a twirling instructor for over 20 years or as “Mama Hampton” to the Churchill Band and Color Guard, she dedicated her life to helping young people be their best.

When not working or supporting others, Mickey could usually be found at the lake, surrounded by friends and family. Waterskiing, boat rides, BBQs, picnics, and relaxing summer afternoons highlighted the weekends most of her life.

Mickey was creative and artistic, with a strong eye for design. She was known to sew anything from flags to costumes and to make handmade wooden gifts for friends and family. She and Wayne even owned a boutique craft store early in their lives. She also had a strong faith and dedicated her life to Christ. She was a life-long member of Coker United Methodist Church in San Antonio and treasured her friendships through fellowship, especially in the Becomers Sunday School Class.

After retirement in 2013, Mickey spent most of her time with her daughters, sons-in-law, and growing number of grandchildren. Her days as Nana were filled with games, sports, reading books, and tons of snuggles.

Mickey would be described as sugar and spice by those that knew her best. She was a strong woman with a business degree and working in management at a time when women were encouraged to take typing classes. She also had the kindest heart. She fiercely loved her friends and family, was their strongest cheerleader, and would do anything for them. Although dementia made her last few years a little more challenging, she maintained both her sugar and spice, championing her friends and family while keeping everyone in line. Her strength, support, advice, hugs, and, most of all, her unwavering love will be deeply missed.

Mickey was preceded in death by her parents, James V. “Mac” and Mary Helen McCoy, and her brother and sister-in-law, James R. “Rod” and Linda McCoy, and her beloved husband, Wayne Hampton. She is survived by her daughters, Amanda “Mandy” Hampton Wray and husband Kraig of East Lansing, MI, and Heather Williams and husband Greg of Shreveport, LA, and her grandchildren, McCoy, Maddy, Marlowe, and Kallen.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 10:00 am at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Marble Falls, TX. Burial will follow at Lakeland Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
