Upon graduating from Mansfield Senior High School in 1939, Bill went on to serve in the U.S. Army, where he was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. He married Virginia Quaintance on March 6, 1943. They were married for 73 years and raised two daughters, Judith Bauer Regula and Carol Bauer, both deceased. Bill retired from White Westinghouse in 1984 after 44 years of employment.
Bill was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the Mansfield Venus Lodge #152, the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus, and Baku Grotto. He was a lifelong member of St. John's United Church of Christ. Bill's hobbies included golfing, beekeeping, fishing and volunteering with R.S.V.P. and many other area organizations. Bill spent a memorable day on his 90th birthday, participating in the Veteran's Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C. He was selected by R.S.V.P. to submit a videotape memorial that is now part of the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.
Bill is survived by his wife, Virginia Bauer; grandchildren, Kelley Thomas of Ashland, Ohio, Denise Roark of Maryville, Tennessee, Lane Allen of Idaho and Andy Evans of Idaho; brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Beverly Bauer of Mansfield; sister, Dorothy Layman of Mansfield; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2016, at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 98 S. Diamond St., Mansfield, followed by a Masonic service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Jared Ruark officiating. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park with military honors presented by the Richland County Joint Veterans Burial Detail. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ.
