Philip S. Hardin, 87, of Mansfield, died Thursday, October 9, 2008 surrounded by his family. Born February 19, 1921 in Lawrence, Kentucky, he was the son of Solomon Jackson and Sallie K. Shivel Hardin. Employed by General Motors, he retired after 32 ½ years of service as a tool and die repairman. He served in the Army during WWII, receiving the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theator Ribbon W/3 Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon W/2 Bronze Stars, and the Good Conduct Ribbon. Philip rested in the promise of John 3:16, For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life. A current member of Lincoln Heights Baptist Church, he was asked to help in the mission and building of Lexington Baptist Church. He served as a Deacon as well as any other position he was needed. Anyone who knew him or anyone who met him, knew he loved the Lord. He made that clear within the first five minutes of speaking with him. Philip was also known to many as "Grandad". He was an avid and loyal fan of Ontario Schools Sports. He supported his children and grandchildren until he was physically unable to attend, but was kept up on everything through his family. Philip was also a lifelong fan of Kentucky Wildcat basketball.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie Rose McHenry Hardin, whom he married October 5, 1951; children, Wendell Barbara Hardin of Vanceburg, Kentucky, Phil Hardin, Sonja Kreis, both of Ontario, and Teresa Hardin-Pensante of Ontario and Scott Pensante of New York; 12 grandchildren, Brian Hardin, Robin Andy Utz, Jarrod Brooke Hardin, all of Ontario, Wendi Jimmy Rasado, Brittany Hardin, both of Florida, Jacob Hardin, Alison Hardin, both of Lexington, Adam Kreis, Hannah Hardin, both of Ontario, Ashley Stein, Chelsie Pensante, and Ethan Pensante, all of Ontario; six great-grandchildren, Leah Hardin, Kalib Utz, Rylee Utz, Grayson Hardin, Alissa Rosado, and Ava Rose Calise; eight brothers and sisters, Clint Betty Hardin of Mansfield, Gail Vernon Martin of Proctorville, Lucille Sullivan, Ernestine Don Morford, all of Florida, George Linda Hardin of Louisa, Kentucky, Janice James Webb of Texas, Bill Janet Hardin, and Francis Barbara Hardin, all of Louisa, Kentucky; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Irene Hardin; and three brothers, Mac, Jack Jr., and Lawrence Hardin.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 100 S. Lexington-Springmill Rd., Mansfield. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home conducted by Pastor Mike Wilson. Friends may also call Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
