Joseph Evan Emanuel

Joseph Evan Emanuel, 77, of Ashland passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2019 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Joseph was born on August 10, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Joseph and Margaret (Thomas) Emanuel.

Joseph worked at the Mifflin Inn for his parents who were owners from 1953-1973, and later owned and operated it with his sister from 1973-1976. He was employed and retired from Columbia Gas after 30 years of dedicated service. Joseph was a gentleman farmer who enjoyed tending for his cows. He enjoyed being outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping. Joseph was a talented woodworker and enjoyed playing computer games. He was a member of the Ashland Masonic Lodge #151 F&AM.

He is survived by his sons, Joseph Emanuel and John (Kathy) Emanuel; his daughter, Beth Emanuel; his granddaughter, who was his little buddy, Maggie Carrington; brother-in-law, Jim Bittinger; his two nephews who were like his sons, J.J. (Amanda) Bittinger and their two children (Hunter and Hayley) and Michael Bittinger; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Davis; and six additional nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 51 years, Anne Ernestine (Meade) Emanuel; and his sister, Margaret Bittinger.

Family and friends may visit from 4:00-7:00 pm on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Vermillion Cemetery in Hayesville, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Mifflin Township Volunteer Fire Department.
