George W. Hiller, 62, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Good Shepherd Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born November 6, 1954 in Ashland, Ohio, he was the son and third child of Raymond and Dorothy (Winger) Hiller.
Due to the lack of proper development before birth, he was born with limited mental functions. That did not stop him from having a kind heart for others, especially animals. Raised on a farm, he made pets out of some of the farm animals. With a couple of neighbor boys that played and worked with him, he learned to ride a bike, spiral a football, and shoot baskets. When going to Special Olympics, he won many ribbons and awards for field events.
He was a steady and faithful participant of Dale Roy School and Workshop. He lived at the farm with his mother until she could no longer meet his needs. He then moved to a group home in 1997. He was a member of First Church of the Brethren, where he served as an usher in his youth.
The family wishes to give thanks to the opportunities that Dale Roy provided, and the kind and patient people that helped him in any way. Also, special thanks to Jodi and Heather for their dedicated care given to George while residing at the group home.
He is survived by a sister, Jennie (Ted) Baltes of Versailles; a brother, Raymond (Phyllis) Hiller, Jr. of Ashland; a niece, Katie Tancray; three nephews, Matthew Baltes, Ryan Hiller and Jerod Hiller; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Dorothy Hiller.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Ashland conducted by Pastor Donald Earlenbaugh.
Memorial contributions may be made to Dale Roy School and Workshop, 1256 Center Street, Ashland, OH 44805.
The Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
