Born on August,14, 1929 in Newark, New Jersey, Lou grew up in Orange, the son of Albert and Effie DeTroia and older brother to Anthony and Carol (Mustalish). He graduated from Orange High School and married his one true love Phyllis Turrisi DeTroia. Lou proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war.
Lou and Phyll lived in Orange until they settled in Roseland where they raised their two sons and entertained many family and friends in their home and around their pool. A life-long adventurer, Lou loved to discover new restaurants and lead his dinner group on outings that he had thoroughly investigated – all before the internet. His adventures moved from restaurants in New Jersey to restaurants and places of interest all over the world – from Russia to South America and so many destinations in between. He loved nothing better than recalling the stories and recommending to everyone all the places they had eaten and stayed in remote towns in Italy, Spain and so many other locations.
Upon retirement from New Jersey Bell, Lou and Phyllis moved to Manchester, NJ where they continued to live life to the fullest. A born athlete, Lou’s reputation as a “senior” athlete blossomed. Whether on the mound as a softball pitcher, an avid bowler, horseshoes and finally golf, Lou excelled and was very competitive despite always laughing and smiling with his teammates. After golf cocktails were often served on Buckingham Drive.
Pop was a kind, gentle and loving grandfather to his grandchildren Mark (Jessica), Kaitlin, Matthew (Kelsey) and Kristen. He beamed with pride at their every accomplishment and the beautiful great grandchildren they shared with him – Violet, Julia, Danielle, Price and Wells. Sitting at the head of the table on a holiday or Sunday dinner down the shore, Poppy was the patriarch and loved the role. Friends and family alike enjoyed listening to his stories and advice. At 94 years young, he was vibrant and sharp as a tack. He will be sorely missed by all, and we are all consoled by the fact that Lou and Phyllis are together again.
Services were held privately.
