A native Staten Islander, Steve, as he was known to his family and friends, grew up in Emerson Hill, later residing in Todt Hill with his wife and children. He moved to Monroe Township ten years ago. After attending Curtis High School, Steve graduated from Wesleyan University in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in English. He then went on to attend Vanderbilt University School of Law. During his time at Vanderbilt, he served as the Case and Notes Editor of the Vanderbilt Law Review and was a member of the Vanderbilt chapter of the Order of the Coif, a prestigious National Honor Society for law students. Steve graduated law school eighth in his class in 1972 with a Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD). He continued his education at New York University and received an LL.M. in Taxation in 1976. He was a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Staten Island Trial Lawyers Association. Practicing law in the St. George region of Staten Island for over 27 years, he retired in 1999 due to medical reasons.
Steve was a member of the Board of Directors at the Jewish Community Center of Staten Island and served as vice president and treasurer. It was at the JCC, in 1966, where he asked a 16 year old Beth Einziger for a date. Having known Beth since he was 7 years old, Steve was relieved (and lucky) when she said yes! They officially started dating, and were married in 1969, sharing over 55 years of wedded bliss.
Steve was an avid reader of everything from historical nonfiction to biographies to suspense novels. In his younger years, he enjoyed golf, tennis, and biking. He also loved cars, painting, Broadway shows, good food, collecting Mont Blanc fountain pens, and gambling. Steve took pride in being a frequent winner at poker and other gambling events. If you knew Steve, you knew his sense of humor. He often embarrassed his wife, children, and grandchildren, but always with love.
Steve, also known as PopPop, relished discussing world events with his granddaughters. Teah and Callia were the lights of his life. As his daughters often pointed out, the only pictures posted on the inside of his dresser doors were of PopPop and his granddaughters.
Steve is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Royal M. Howard and Muriel Lu Howard (nee Russell) and brother, Davis J. Howard. He is survived by his devoted wife, Beth Howard of Monroe Township, NJ, his beloved daughters, Jill Howard of Staten Island, NY and Kimberly D. Arum and her husband, Seth of Rutland, MA, and his cherished granddaughters, Teah B. Arum and Callia R. Arum.
