Born and bred in Brooklyn, New York, he raised his family in Marlboro, New Jersey, and eventually settled in Jackson with his loving wife, Joy, during his retirement years.
A teacher and musician by nature, Cantor Neil Ben-Isvy’s professional life consisted of both teaching high school in the New York City public school system, from which he retired in the early 1980’s and served as Marlboro Jewish Center’s cantor from its inception in 1971 until his retirement in 2004. During his distinguished career as a spiritual leader, Cantor Neil Ben-Isvy trained more than 2,500 students for their B’nai Mitzvot and officiated the life events of countless members of the Marlboro Jewish Center community.
Cantor Neil Ben-Isvy is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy; his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa; his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Ben-Isvy and James Freiman; his son, Jonathan; and his four grandchildren, Daniel, Noah and Zach Ben-Isvy, and Ella Freiman.
The funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at Marlboro Jewish Center, 103 School Road West, Marlboro, NJ 07746 in the Hazzan Neil Ben-Isvy Sanctuary.
Interment will immediately follow at the Congregation Agudath Achim Cemetery, Business Route 33, Freehold, NJ.
Shiva will be observed at the home of Lisa and Jamie from Sunday until Thursday from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM with minyan at 7:00 PM each evening.
