Andy was raised in the Bronx with his brother and sister. He was a loving and gentle soul who always looked out for his siblings growing up and as an adult. Andy was very protective of his younger brother and sister. His brother tells a story about how Andy didn’t hesitate to jump in when he and his friends were being bullied. Those bullies didn’t know what hit them and never bothered Richard again. He has always been very supportive of all those around him, especially his family including his cousins, nieces and nephews.
After high school Andy went to New York University, ultimately graduating from NYU with a Master’s degree in Engineering. He had a long career as a Senior Systems Engineer with a variety of companies. Andy was in the ROTC and was a Captain in the Army Reserves serving with honor and pride.
One of Andy’s greatest passions was bowling, which he loved to talk about! He played in multiple local leagues and would do anything not to miss the games. It didn’t matter how he bowled, only that he could bowl. It was without a doubt his favorite thing to do next to being with, or talking to, his family, (about bowling!). He made many friends in the leagues he played in that will miss him dearly.
Andy is survived by his sister Dorene Zurlo and her husband James of North Salem, New York; brother Richard Knapp and his wife Ingrid of Aldie, Virginia; nephew Jim Zurlo and his wife Alysia, great nephew Aiden; niece Emily Zurlo; nephew Nicholas Zurlo and his fiancé Becky; nephew Christopher Knapp and his wife Christina; great-niece Isabella; niece Naomi Nabbit and her wife Sarah; great-niece Maya; as well as many cousins that adored him. He will be sorely missed by all and never forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
No public shiva will be observed.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Andy's memory may be made to the Association of the United States Army, Inc., Monmouth, New Jersey chapter (www.ausa.org/chapters/monmouth-chapter) or to the Lymphoma Foundation of America (www.lymphomahelp.org).
