Kenneth Edward Hansen

Kenneth Edward Hansen of Naples, Fla., and Manahawkin, N.J., passed away Friday, May 8, 2015. He was 79.

Ken was born June 30, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Nicholas and Rose Hansen. He grew up in Brooklyn, and lived in Newtown, Pa. and Harvey Cedars, N.J., prior to his move to Naples and Manahawkin.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Kay; his children, Louise Hansen (Shira Modell) and Erik Hansen (Marilou Doneker Hansen); his sisters, Gail Donegan (Joe Donegan) and Lois Deragon (the late Paul Deragon); and many nieces and nephews. He also is survived by his beloved grandchildren, Brien, Allison (Ally), Julia, and Nicholas (Nick). He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Frederick Hansen.

Ken earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the City College of New York and following graduation served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, where he earned his submariner dolphins. He later earned his Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked his entire professional career as a chemical engineer with Rohm and Haas where he specialized in plastics and injection molding technology.

Ken loved to fish and regularly hit the bay and ocean around Long Beach Island. He was a long-time stamp collector and enjoyed reading, especially history and historical novels. Ken was also a "jack of all trades" - electrician, plumber, carpenter, mason - who could build or fix most anything with his "Ken-do" attitude. He frequently volunteered these skills at the Surf City Yacht Club, where he was also a third-generation Commodore and at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Naples. He was also a Master Mason with the Freemasons and a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 4700 Long Beach Blvd., Brant Beach, N.J. at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 13.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
