James (Jim) A. White, 84, of Manahawkin, NJ, formerly of Washington, PA., passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 peacefully at home in the presence of his loving family. Jim was born in Linesville, PA. and graduated from Harrisburg High School. He attended Slippery Rock University and received his master’s degree in physical education from Michigan State. He was employed at Washington & Jefferson College for 34 years. During that time, he coached football, wrestling and tennis, and retired as the Associate Athletic Director. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame and W&J Hall of Fame, receiving an honorary doctorate from W&J upon retirement.
Jim and his wife, Claire, relocated to Long Beach Island, New Jersey in 1997. For the next 17 years, Jim was employed at Loveladies Tennis Foundation every summer, where he lived out his dream of playing tennis every day.
He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Saxton.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Claire Hanlon White. The couple enjoyed 52 years of marriage. Together, they have 3 daughters, Laura Bartley, Lisa White, and Colleen Zeltt. He is also survived by his 5 grandchildren, Katie and Meghan Bartley, Ryan, Emma and Ben Zeltt and his sister Mary Ann Churba.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, 10 Hilliard Dr., Manahawkin, NJ from 2:00-4:00pm and 7:00-9:00pm. A Mass will be held on Monday, July 30 at 11:00am at St. Mary of the Pines Catholic Church, 100 Bishop Lane, Manahawkin, NJ. Committal service will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Beachview Ave., Manahawkin.
