Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Ruby Nelson. He graduated from DuPont High School in 1966. He served in combat in Vietnam from 1967-1968 in the 4th infantry division of the United States Army. From 2004 until he was no longer able, he attended weekly Vietnam Veterans meetings where he became acquainted with many other veterans including his best friend, Leon Perry.
He worked for the Laborers Union 1353 and retired from the Elevator Union. He was a faithful member of Big Bottom Missionary Baptist Church where he was privileged to service as a trustee.
Virgil is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy; three children, David (Shawna) Nelson, Amy (Mark) Stephens and Wendy (Justin) Beasley; five grandchildren, Hunter and Walker Woods, Bailey (Cory) Stainbrook, Abby Nelson and Nathaniel Beasley; two great granddaughters, River Woods and Amelia Stainbrook; brother, Lawrence (Patsy) Nelson; sister, Jane (Jim) Smith.
The family would like to thank Stacey from Hospice Care, the VA, Dr. Jogenpolly, Dr. Haffar and Dr. Mahmood for providing great care over these past four years. Special thanks to his two favorite nurses, Shelly Beard and Charlie Moore.
Virgil donated his body for Medical Research to West Virginia University. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6:00 PM on Tuesday August 27, 2024 at Big Bottom Baptist Church with Pastors Greg Johnson and Fred Christian officiating.
