On December 30, 2012, a special rose was picked when Virgie Hamilton Johns, 96, of Lynchburg, went home to be with her Lord, surrounded by her loving and devoted family, at her home. She was the wife of the late Lemon Wiley Johns.
Born July 14, 1916 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Will and Lillian Adcock Hamilton and was also preceded in death by five sons, Warren, Matthew, Mitchell, Leonard and Dewey; two daughters, Margaret Ann Johns and Lorene Johns; three brothers, Clarence, John, and Willie Hamilton; three sisters, Fannie Gayleard, Frances Barker, and Cora Branham and two grandsons, Tony Garland Hicks and Jefferey Scott Staples.
Virgie was employed by William E. Sandidge for fifty years, was a proud member of the Monacan Indian Tribe and will always be remembered for big meals, caring for others, collecting dolls, and tending to her flowers. She attended St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
Virgie is survived by five children, Donald R. Johns and wife Sheryl of Evington, Brent E. Johns of Lynchburg, Bonnie L. Hicks and husband Clarence of Madison Heights, Arlene F. Staples and husband John of Rustburg, and Dolly Ashley and husband Roy of Lynchburg; twelve grandchildren, including Luther R. Johns, who she raised as a son; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two special nephews, Branch Branham and Lloyd Johns; a host of other nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law, Elsie Johns of Lynchburg; a sister-in-law, Hattie Bell Hamilton of Monroe and special friends, Margaret and Bobby Reynolds.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with the Rev. Sharon Bryant and Rev. Dwayne Martin officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, December 31, 2012 at the funeral home and other times at Virgie’s residence.
