Born in Lynchburg, February 11, 1958, he was the son of the late Rev. William Hugh Bumgarner and Ardie Pless Bumgarner. Alan was currently serving as the Youth Sports Coordinator for the Amherst County Parks and Recreation. Prior to that he spent the majority of his working career at Benchmark Systems in Lynchburg. Alan was a lifelong member of Madison Heights Baptist Church where he served in the choir, taught Sunday school and had served on the board of Deacons. He was active in his community and was a past member of the Amherst County School Board and the Pedlar Mills Ruritan Club. Fishing and hunting were Alan’s passions. He enjoyed fishing in tournaments with his son and friends. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife, Terry Bumgarner; two sons, Matthew Ryan Bumgarner and Jacob Alan Bumgarner and his wife Courtney; one grandson, Hayden Bumgarner and one sister, Donna Massie and her husband Harold.
A service celebrating Alan’s life and faith will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021 at the Coolwell Recreational center, 640 N. Coolwell Rd., Amherst with Pastor Todd Blake officiating. The family welcomes friends to attend and bring a chair.
The family will receive friends prior to the service for two hours, from 9 to 11 a.m. Social distancing and Covid protocols will be observed.
