Richard D. Johnson, Jr. 81 of Madison, husband of Marjorie H. Johnson, passed away on September 4, 2015 at home surrounded by loved ones. Born on June 28, 1934 in New Haven, he was the son of the late Edith (Pearson) Johnson and Richard D. Johnson, Sr. of North Haven. He resided in Madison for 51 years. He graduated from Hamden High School, University of Connecticut, and the National School of Savings Banking at Fairfield University. Mr. Johnson was employed by The New Haven Savings Bank for 37 years, retiring in 1996. He served 2 years active duty in the U.S. Army stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany and 4 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. A member of The Lutheran Church of Madison for 50 years, he served in roles as Treasurer, Financial Secretary, and Building Fund Chairman. Richard was a member of the University Glee Club of New Haven for 46 years and was active in numerous community organizations including SARAH and Interfaith Housing. He was also a lifelong Red Cross blood donor. With his free time, Richard loved playing golf and cheering on the Red Sox and UCONN basketball teams. Besides his wife Marjorie, he is survived by his daughter Sally Johnson Meier of Longmont, CO, by his son and daughter-in-law David and Ann Johnson of Middletown, RI, and by his grandchildren Catherine Johnson, Charles Johnson, Joseph Johnson, Andrew Meier, and Jeffrey Meier. Burial will be private. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at The Lutheran Church of Madison on Tuesday September 8, 2015 at 2 p.m. with a reception immediately following.
