David Wheeler Loomis, of Madison CT, passed away on December 6th 2024 at the age of 88. He was born on February 7th, 1936 in Toledo, Ohio where he grew up with his parents and two siblings. He attended schools in Cleveland, Hudson, La Jolla, and the Harvard School in Los Angeles, California. He attended Yale University Navy ROTC program, graduating in 1958, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering. He attended flight school in Pensacola and later became a Navy Pilot for 5 ½ years flying both the A1 Skyraider as well and the A4 Skyhawk. He then had a long career as an airline pilot spending 26 years with Pan Am and 6 ½ years with Delta, retiring in 1998.
He enjoyed travelling the world, but especially enjoyed traveling to see family in California and Switzerland. Some of his favorite hobbies included building and flying radio-controlled planes and tinkering in the garage on various projects. He enjoyed volunteering for various organizations such as Habitat for Humanity. However, his most favorite activity was anything that involved being with family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Richard and Jane Loomis, his stepmother Rosamond, his first wife Cristina, as well as his brother Richard Loomis.
He is survived by his loving wife Sylvia of 42 years, sons John and Peter (Whitney), stepdaughter Sara (Tim), sister Mary Dorn, and his four loving grandchildren Sean, Grayson, Tanner, and Audrey.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at ARK in Branford for the care and compassion they showed David in his final days.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation at Swan Funeral Home in Madison on Friday January 10th, 2025. Visitation with the family will begin at 3pm and go until 7pm. Private Burial service and Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
