Dr. Thomas Sard Union, Jr. 89, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 21, 2024, surrounded by his family. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father John Johnson officiating. A Rosary will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2024, at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Bass Road with a reception to follow. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery Northgate. Dr. Thomas Sard Union, Jr., was born on August 24, 1935, to the late Thomas Sard Union Sr. and Pheado Smaha Union. A graduate of Lanier High School for Boys, Class of 1953 and he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He attended the University of Georgia, graduating in 1962 with a Batchelor of Science Degree in Chemistry. After working as a Chemist, he became a student again obtaining a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Degree from Temple University School of Medicine. While in Medical School, he met the love of his life, Sandy. They were married in November 1966, seven months after their first date. They moved back to his hometown in Macon in 1968 where he practiced Podiatry for 45 years. He valued his work of helping others and impacted thousands of lives with his sweet smile and calming care. He appreciated every patient and every employee he had the privilege to work with.
Dr. Union was active in the Catholic Church having attended both St. Joseph’s and Holy Spirit. He was a Grand Knight of 3rd and 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and served as past board member of Mount de Sales Academy, The Lion’s Club and Optimist Club, American Legion, and Moose Club. He was an active member of Howard Community Club and Southern Federation of Lebanese American Clubs and Cedars Club of Atlanta. He was a past member of the Parish Council at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and helped organize the Men’s Club. He was awarded the Bishop Gartland Service Award in 2017 for his service in the Catholic Church.
Tom was a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family and encouraging them. He was very proud of his grandchildren and greatly enjoyed family time at the lake where everyone could be together.
Survivors include his loving wife of 58 years, Sandy Union of Macon, son, Thomas S. Union, III of Macon and daughter, Laura Union (Jon) Paxton of Macon; three grandchildren, Brandon Paxton of Perry and Natalie Paxton and Thomas S. Union IV all of Macon, his brother, Joseph (Gail) Union, Sr. of Macon, Barbara Union Smith of Gray, and Gloria Union (Norman) Smith of Charleston SC, sister-in-law, Donna Albert Zogby of Raleigh, NC and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and other family members: Marvin Buck Smith, Jana Smith Daughtry, Samuel Edward Albert, Roshide K. Zogby and Samuel R. Zogby.
