Samuel Larry "Duck" Pierce

Samuel Lawrence “Larry” Pierce, Jr. 62, was called to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 2, 2012. He worked up until the moment before he passed on. Larry was affectionately called “The Candyman” by many who knew him through his candy business and also as “Duck” to his grandsons, Charlie and Sam and the many children who loved him.

Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 9:30 a.m. to service time on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Corbitt and the Rev. Chris Peavy and the Rev. Frank Harris officiating. The family respectfully asks that any memorial contributions be made to the Building Fund at Bethany Baptist Church, 365 Pea Ridge Road, Bolingbroke GA 31004.

Larry was born in Macon to the late Samuel L. Pierce, Sr. and Mary Lee Pierce. He graduated from Lanier Senior High School for Boys and later graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College with a degree in Forestry and he worked in the forestry field for three years. Larry worked for Borden’s Dairy. He later sold insurance for several companies in Bibb and Monroe counties.

He was the owner of McCrackin Street Sweets, a confectionary company that began in Juliette, Georgia and was later moved to Sugar Plum Hill, a candy factory built behind his home in Macon. He had been in this candy business since the late 1980’s. His local customers know him from the Georgia National Fair in Perry, Georgia in the McGill Building, Christmas Made in the South, Wesleyan Market, and Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival. He was recognized in 2002 as Volunteer of the Year for community service through the Cherry Blossom Festival.

He loved life; he loved children; and he loved his family. He was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church. He worked with the AWANA Cubbies program and was a faithful member of the Koinonia Sunday School Class. Larry was preceded in death by his father, Samuel L. Pierce, Sr. and his brother, William R. Pierce.

Left to cherish the memories he left behind are his loving wife of forty one years and best friend, Donna B. Pierce; his precious daughter, Jeannie Wilder; his beloved grandsons, Charlie J. Wilder and Samuel B. Wilder; his sweet mama, Mary L. Pierce; his much loved mother and father-in-law, Jeanette S. Brooks and H. Paul Brooks; his sister-in-law, Camille Watts; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
