Martha McCord and her twin Mary were born on March 10, 1919 in Oliver, Screven County, Georgia. Her father was a third generation South Georgia Methodist minister, so she moved frequently. After graduation from Young Harris College, Martha joined her parents in Macon and began her long faithful service to Bass United Methodist Church where her father was pastor. Martha married Edwin Giles at Bass Church on August 10, 1941. Martha’s husband served for many years as church treasurer while she kept the records. After her husband’s death in 1974, she continued as treasurer for over twenty-five years. She was a member of the church choir, the United Methodist Women, and the Fellowship Sunday school class.
Martha was treasurer of the Pacesetters of the Macon Methodist District from its inception. She traveled with the group throughout North America, Europe, the Holy Land and Australia.
Martha was a wonderful cook and often shared her baking during visits with the sick or bereaved. She crocheted beautiful bedspreads and tablecloths and immaculately maintained her large yard until she moved from her home on Edna Place.
Martha managed the books and took the calls for the family business, Giles Electric Company. Martha was always a multitasker. She simultaneously answered her business phone, counted the church collection, and watched the Atlanta Braves while one of her four layer caramel cakes was baking.
Martha Giles was preceded in death by, her parents, Rev. John Dwight McCord and Elizabeth Taylor McCord; her sisters, Minnie Collier and Mary Winn; her brother, Dr. John D McCord, Jr.; her husband, John Edwin Giles; and her son, Carl Dwight Giles.
Survivors include: daughters, Marie (Ned) Newman, Macon, Jocquelyn (Dr. Jim) Stumpff, Anderson, SC; grandchildren Lisa Harris, Gainesville, GA, Pamela (Eric) Buford, Monroe County, Caleb Frase, Augusta, SC; sister-in-law Lois McCord, Fitzgerald; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
