Dr. Joseph Lee Boland, Jr., 91, passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022. A Celebration of his Life will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, April 15, 2022 at Forest Hills United Methodist Church with visitation following. Burial will be private for family only in Riverside Cemetery. Dr. Baxter Hurley will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Forest Hills United Methodist Church,1217 Forest Hill Road, Macon 31210.
Dr. Boland was born in Macon the son of the late Mattie Kate Sullivan Boland and Joseph Lee Boland, Sr. and was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Lee Boland, III and siblings, Margaret Ann Wright and Charles “Buck” Boland, Betty Windham Kitchens (sister in law), Bob Rhinehart (brother in law)
Dr. Boland is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mary Jane Jones Boland; 3 children, Jan Boland of Macon, Jill Dykes (Jim) of Dothan, AL and Paul Boland (Lis) of Macon; grandchildren, Tony Harris (Annie), Ellis Dykes, Sullivan Dykes, Boland Dykes, Amelia Boland (Morgan Geiser), Claire Beachy (Parker), Mary Jane Boland, and Ann Drew Boland; great-grandchildren, Lilly Harris, Lilah Harris, and Isabella Harris; brothers and sisters, Sue Rhinehart and Dan Boland (Ena) Eddie Wright (brother in law), Elsie Wade Reese (sister in law); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dr. Boland retired at the age of 88 from his aesthetic and restorative dentistry practice as one of Macon’s most beloved dentist. Dr. Boland was a United States Army veteran and a member of Forest Hills United Methodist Church.
For 20 years, Joe worked at Fincher’s Barbecue on Houston Avenue, starting as a curb boy and working his way up to manager. After graduating from Lanier High school, he attended Georgia Tech majoring in architecture. He transferred to Mercer University and married the love of his life Mary Jane. Directly after graduation, he was drafted into the Army and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict for 2 years.
Upon his return to Macon, he worked at Fincher's for an additional seven years before beginning to pursue a career in dentistry. He was accepted to the University of Tennessee's College of Dentistry and graduated as a doctor of dental surgery at the age of 36.
Dr. Boland practiced dentistry in Macon for over 50 years. His expert work and warm personality restored many smiles.
