John B. (‘J.B.’) Sumner, 93, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 in Atlanta, Ga. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M., on Saturday, December 15, 2012 in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will meet friends from Noon until service time at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the following: Crossroads Hospice of Atlanta, First Presbyterian Church of Macon or Calvary Baptist Church in Macon.
He was a resident of Brighton Gardens Assisted Living Facility. Mr. Sumner was the son of John Quincy Adams Sumner and Ruby Dell Sumner, and grew up in Wrightsville, GA. He served in World War II in London, England, as part of the 390th bomb group. He lived most of his life in Warner Robins where he was employed at Robins Air Force Base, where he retired in 1980. Mr. Sumner was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Macon, and had been a resident of Atlanta since 2011 following a long illness.
His beloved wife, Vivian, precedes him in death in 2008. They had a son, Philip Randall, who died in 1959 and his brother, Elridge F. Sunmer , who died in 2003. He is survived by a daughter, Ingrid Louise, of Atlanta; two granddaughters, Shannon Louise Murphree of Montgomery, Alabama (Mrs. Neal Murphree); Brooke Elizabeth Lampe of Atlanta (Mrs. Michael Lampe); a sister, Lois Dixon of Jacksonville, Florida; three brothers, John A. Sumner of Jacksonville, Florida, Delma Sumner of Eatonton, Georgia, and Kenneth Sumner of Modesto, CA; two great-grandchildren, Hannah Brooke Murphree and Knox Sumner Murphree of Montgomery, AL, and many nieces and nephews.
