Hilda Giddens Pruett, 100 years old, passed away peacefully on August 14, 2023. Loved by everyone who had the good fortune to know her, Hilda was born on December 8, 1922 in Eastman, Ga. Her parents were Burrell Jackson Giddens and Nellie McConnell Giddens.
She is predeceased by her husband, Keith Floyd Pruett, and son, David Keith Pruett, and brothers, Aubrey and Jack Giddens.
She is survived by her daughter, Brenda P. Butler, of Sarasota, Fl and her son, Henry Lee Pruett (Kayla), of Decatur, Ga. She is also survived by grandchildren, Christy Fenhagen, Erin Pruett, Keith Pruett, Jim Barbee, Brandy Black, Michael Pruett, Will Pruett, David Butler and Robert Butler, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She grew up in Dodge County, Ga and played on the High School girls’ basketball team. She went on to earn her B.S. degree from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, Ga. After the death of her husband, she raised her three young children in Macon as a single mother. She worked for 25 years at Mercer University and retired in 1986 as the Executive Assistant to the President.
She was a long-time member of Cherokee Heights Baptist Church (now New Heights Baptist Church) where she taught Sunday School and served on various committees. Her faith was always a central part of her life. She was the last remaining member of Chow and Chatter, a large group of friends within the church
She was an avid quilter and a member of Heart of Georgia Quilt Guild where she served three years as President and one term each as Newsletter Editor, Treasurer and Chairman of the Guild’s Quilt Show. She had a passion for quilting and made hundreds of beautiful quilts. At 100 years old, she was still quilting up to the last week before she passed. She also continued to enjoy using a computer, working crossword puzzles, reading, playing Rummikub with family and friends, playing Wordle with her daughter every morning and, of course, watching and rooting for the Atlanta Braves.
She lived her final two years with her daughter, Brenda, in Sarasota, Fl.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Snow’s @ Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family will greet friends from 10:00 a.m. to service time. Burial will be private for family only with the Rev. Len Strozier officiating. Flowers will be accepted and appreciated.
