A native of Lake Wales, FL, Hilda received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, FL. where she met the love of her life for almost 56 years, Issac Jones, Jr. She always said that their love was like Georgia pines meets Florida oranges. After marriage, she and Ike relocated to his hometown of McIntyre, GA. Her further studies led to earning both a Master of Education degree (M.Ed.), and Educational Leadership degree (L-6), at Georgia College and State University, Milledgeville, GA. A Master of Social Work degree (MSW), was acquired at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA.
A career that began as an elementary teacher for fourteen years in Wilkinson County Schools, Irwinton, GA, progressed to other positions and duties. A dual title of School Social Worker/Administrator was created, resulting in Hilda’s assignment to the office of the Wilkinson County School District, and was employed in that position for nineteen years. After retiring, and moving to Macon, GA, she returned to teaching, working in the Bibb County School District for several years.
Being a committed member of The Beulahland Bible Church, Hilda understood that in God’s Word she would find strength, hope, love, peace and joy. She faithfully served and participated in several church Ministries: Hospitality; Marriage and Relationship; Women of Grace; and Volunteerism. She also distributed blankets to the homeless. Because a part of her church’s Mission is, “Changing Lives in Middle Georgia,” Hilda was actively involved in helping to make a difference throughout this community through her work in the above mentioned Ministries.
Soror Hilda was initiated into the undergraduate Gamma Tau Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated at Bethune-Cookman College on December 10, 1964. She earned the Golden Soror status with 59 years of service in the sorority as of December 10, 2023. Since becoming a member of the Epsilon Omega Omega Graduate Chapter in 1996, she faithfully participated and worked diligently on various committees and chapter programs over the years. One of her most proud moments was being recognized by her Sorors and presented with the “2016 Extra Mile Award.” Being a part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was one of the highlights in her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Issac (Ike) Jones; her parents Mr. James “Jimmy” Travis and Mrs. Cecilia Arnetta Crawford Travis and her brothers Jim Travis, Herman Travis and Hiram Travis. She is survived by her three children, Jarvis Jones, Travis Jones, and Tarah Jones, five grandchildren, J’Terius Jones, Munashe Jones, Kennedi Jones, Averi Jones and Mason Jones and her siblings Tillie (Albert) Tomlin, Rose Travis, and Terry Lee Travis and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. They all brought her much love, joy and happiness. Hilda was a kind, hardworking and enthusiastic person with a larger than life personality. She enjoyed living a healthy lifestyle, traveling, making others happy, and watching her favorite show “The Voice”. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and a mentor who touched the lives of many in the Wilkinson and Bibb County community and beyond.
