DuBose was born March 23, 1935, in Macon, Georgia and attended Bellevue Grammar and Lanier Senior High (Class of 1953) schools.
At the time of his death DuBose held the position of International Past President of the United Transportation Union (SMART-TD) and was a member of SMART-TD Local 0535 at Macon, Georgia.
DuBose was an outspoken advocate for union rights, civil liberties, civil rights, and women’s rights. He was committed to improving the lives of those in need, especially children, the uneducated, and the homeless. He offered so much of himself to family and others through-out his long years of railroad and union service.
He began his railroading career in Macon, Georgia as yard brakeman for the Central of Georgia Railway (now Norfolk Southern Railway) in 1955 and was promoted to yard conductor in 1957.
Elected and served as Chairperson of the Union Local Committee of Adjustment from 1959, to 1963, and as Chairperson, of the Union General Committee of Adjustment from 1963, to 1967.
Elected Vice President of the International Union in 1967, and re-elected in 1971, 1975, 1979 and 1983. He also served as Union Labor Member on the National Railroad Adjustment Board in Chicago, Illinois.
He was elected Assistant International President in 1987 and elected International President of both the United Transportation Union and the United Transportation Union Insurance Association in 1991, with offices in Cleveland, Ohio.
Served as Chairman of the UTU International Board of Directors, UTUIA Board of Directors, International Board of Trustees, Editor of the UTU News, Member of the 1982 UTU National Negotiating Committee and Chairman of the 1987, and 1991 National Negotiating Committees.
In 1992, DuBose was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO, a broad based labor organization consisting of 33 member unions which represents workers in all modes of transportation including aviation, rail, transit, and bus, longshore, maritime, trucking and related industries. TTD is the transportation policy umbrella organization of the National AFL-CIO, which represents over 12 million workers.
Served in the United States Army and Georgia National Guard.
DuBose is predeceased by his Mother, Ellen Louise Ezell DuBose; Father, Cecil Howard DuBose; sisters, Dolly Louise DuBose Smith, Dorothy Lee DuBose Ussery. He is survived by a son Mark Howard DuBose (Margaret) of Macon, Georgia; daughter, Marty DuBose Lee (Kenneth) of Bakersfield, California; grandchildren Matthew T. DuBose (Allie), Kristin R. Lee and Benjamin A. DuBose; brother, H.S. (Ace) DuBose, Pensacola, Florida. He is also survived by numerous close family members and friends.
