Catherine DuPree Rainey, 88, died on November 5, 2012. A memorial service for both Catherine and “Red” Rainey will be held on Monday, November 19th at 2:00 pm at Vineville Baptist Church with Dr. Tripp Martin officiating. The family will greet friends following the memorial service at the church. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Vineville Baptist Church, 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204.
Mrs. Rainey was a native of Hawkinsville, the daughter of the late James D. and Elizabeth E. DuPree. She graduated from Georgia State College for Women and was a member Phoenix Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi National Scholastic Honor Society. Mrs. Rainey was the widow of M. W. “Red” Rainey.
A member of Vineville Baptist Church, at her death, Mrs. Rainey and her husband were active in churches everywhere they lived, including Tokyo, Japan. She taught adults in Sunday school for over 45 years and also served many years as a Discussion Leader in Bible Study Fellowship.
Mrs. Rainey was a founding member and was active in the Heart of Georgia Quilt Guild. She enjoyed teaching her quilting hobby at Macon College and at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. In later years she concentrated her quilting skills on making quilts for the children of battered women at the Rescue Mission, Covenant Care Adoption Services and the Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. At last count she had made and donated over 400 small quilts.
Survivors include daughter Martha R. Rice (Melvin) of Leavenworth, Kansas, grandson Matthew E. Rice (Laura) of Mission, Kansas, great granddaughter, Shelby Mapes also of Leavenworth, Kansas, and a number of nieces and nephews.
