Betty Jean James Moore

BETTY JEAN (JAMES) MOORE passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 30, 2024. She had just celebrated her 94th birthday on August 4th. She had suffered from dementia over the past few years but had lived happily and enjoyed her final years as much as she had most of her life. We should all be as lucky as she was in how she both lived and died. Her services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Macon, Georgia, at 11 AM on September 5th, 2024. It will be a chapel service only, with a viewing starting at 10 AM. The Rev. Joe McDaniel will be officiating.

Betty was born in Macon to the late John and Lucy James. She lived most of her life in the mill village of Payne City, where her late father was both a mill worker and judge. She attended and graduated from Miller School for Girls in 1948. She married not long after graduation to Jack W. Moore Sr. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage, lasting 48 years, until his passing in 1996. At that time, Betty worked as a bookkeeper and accountant, mainly at Maxwell Home Furnishings in Macon. She was a long-time member of Mabel White Baptist Church, having joined in 1961 and remained a member up until her final day.

Betty is survived by her son, Jack W. Moore Jr, along with two granddaughters, Julie and Heather Moore. She is also survived by her nieces Linda James May, and Allison James Kitchens, along with nephews, Terry and Phil James. She has one surviving sister-in-law, Sara James. Betty had two late brothers, Jay and Jesse “Dub” James. She also had a late nephew, John “Danny” James.

In her time, Betty was a professional who worked outside of the home and enjoyed a variety of activities, including motorcycle riding and a host of water activities, including skiing at her home on Lake Sinclair. She loved children and was thought by many of her nephews and nieces as a second mom. Betty had a very outgoing personality and was considered by her friends as the joker and instigator. Her excessive and lovable personality even continued after the onset of dementia. She won over the hearts of many of the healthcare workers who saw her, most of whom became personally attached. Above all else, Betty was an avid shopper and did so with a passion, always looking for the best deal she could find.

Everyone who knew Betty instantly loved her. She never failed to win over those around her with her kindness, love, and joy of life. She will be greatly missed by everyone, her family most of all.
