Leonard Joseph Marinelli, 104, of Rockford, Illinois passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023 peacefully in his sleep. He was born on July 11, 1918 in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Joseph and Mary (Roop) Marinelli. A veteran of WWII serving in the US Marine Corps during the Pacific Campaign. Employed as a tool and die maker until his retirement at age 99. Leonard was a lifetime member of the LLL Society, St. Ambrose Society where he was involved with the sister city, Ferentino, Italy and involved with the committee for the Class of 1936 Central High Rockford class reunion. Leonard was also a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and Senior Holy Name Society. In his younger years he enjoyed bowling and fishing with his brother Albert.
Survivors include children, Candy Marinelli Morris, Brad (Judy) Marinelli, Brian (Stella) Marinelli, Shelby (Mike) Defilipps; 32 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; companion of many years, Anna Saladino; and numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents; former wives, Dona Marinelli, Barbara Marinelli, Ann Marinelli; daughter, Cynthia Marinelli Brinker; siblings, Russell Marinelli, Agnes Gerbitz, Amedeo "Chic" Lohman, Ettore "Tut" Marinelli, Romana Roland, Albert Marinelli; son-in-law, Donald Morris.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 24, 2023 in Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Road, Machesney Park. Visitation will be held again from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Thursday, May 25, 2023 in St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1010 Ferguson Street, Rockford with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 AM. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens Machesney Park with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Loves Park VFW in Leonard's name.
