Giovanna Armato, 98, of Belvidere, Illinois, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at OSF Saint Anthony’s Medical Center. Giovanna was born November 6, 1925, in Italy to Salvatore and Anna Sciame. Giovanna came to the United States in 1982, after her husband Antonino preceded her in death in 1981. Upon her move here, she took care of her family. This ranged from babysitting, cleaning, planting flowers, and above all else, cooking. Two days before her passing she made her final meal of Risotto Marinara for her family. Even at 98 years old, she continued to make her homemade sauce and bread. She also enjoyed knitting blankets and shawls, and baking cookies with her great-grandson, Giovanni. She was truly an amazing woman, who many women looked up to and will continue to honor.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Maria and John Frisella; grandchildren, Joe Frisella and Tarina Frisella, Tonino Armato, Nadia (Nick Opengo) Frisella, and Giovanna Armato; great-grandson, Giovanni Frisella – who she shared a close, unique, and special bond with; daughter-in-law, Enza Armato; two brothers, Giuseppe Sciame and Lillo Sciame.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Antonino; son, Bino Armato; three siblings, and her parents.
