Sue C. Franklin, “Cookie”, nee Cook, 79, of Kaufman Texas was called home by our Lord Jesus on March 31, 2020. She was born in Chandler Oklahoma on March 7, 1941 to Tom Calvin Cook and Melvina Dee Cook. Sue passed away from natural causes.
Sue is preceded in death by her sister Daisy Harmon, brothers Jack, Roy, and Ronnie Cook, great nephew Chase Hetmer, and beloved pets Amy and Andy.
A tragic car accident ended the life of her youngest of two sons, Kenneth Marshall, on April 2, 2020, two days after her passing. Left with cherished memories are her oldest son Wayne Marshall, his wife Merryl Marshall, brother George Cook, his wife Elizabeth Cook, Grandchildren Heather, Derek and Brandon Marshall, Kelly Hurst, Chris and Jake Gobin and Arika Jansen. Also survived by beloved nieces, nephews, numerous grand and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Cookie began her working career in nursing, attending college while staying with her Mom and Dad in Oklahoma, then continued as a nurse for 35 years, with most spent in hospice care helping patients nearing end of life to spend the remaining days in their home free of discomfort and enjoying love, dignity and pride. When I once asked her “Mom, why hospice?” She explained, “Hospice isn’t a job, it’s a calling and it’s an honor to be with people on those final days comforting, bonding and caring, helping their family understand and accept death so they release bad emotions and overcome the fear and sadness”. She added, “I’ve been blessed with a special gift to provide this kind of care”.
Her patients and families expressed love and gratitude sometimes with gifts and by just keeping a lifelong friendship. She adored animals, especially dogs. She had a special bond with one patient and at passing she gave Sue her beloved pet “Amy”, a tiny wiry haired terrier. She cherished Amy and treated her like one of her own children. Soon after adopting Amy, she adopted “Andy”, a Lhasa Apso, as her second child and comfort animal. She called them “fur persons”. They went everywhere she did and she made sure they were spoiled rotten!
She enjoyed cooking and baking, and one of her specialties was making old fashioned candy at Christmas time. This became an annual tradition and her divinity was a favorite! She was known for her famous pot roasts and meatloaf with signature “tomato” gravy. Cookie cherished big family gatherings and when these gourmet dishes were on the menu they always drew the crowd!
Cookie enjoyed getting the family together for card and board games, big meals, or just storytelling and deep conversations. Her love was unconditional and she held a special place in her heart for everyone. Full of generosity and always encouragement she enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Memorial services will be held a later date, to be determined. Gifts and contributions are welcome and these will be applied toward funeral costs for Sue’s son, Kenneth Marshall.
