Jimmy Don Poteet

Jimmy Don Poteet, 76, of Mountlake Terrace, Washington was brought into the Lord’s care after his courageous battle with metastatic bone cancer. Surrounded by his loving family, he passed away peacefully at his home on February 15, 2016.

Jimmy was born August 29, 1939 in Ralls, Texas to Paul and Billie Jean Poteet. He attended Pecos High School where he belonged to the 4-H club, track team, and excelled in football as a star running back.

Jimmy married his high school sweetheart Joyce Colleen O’Neil in September 1958 then enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he was assigned to the Aircraft Carrier Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) receiving an honorable discharge in 1963. In 1964, Jimmy moved to Mountlake Terrace, Washington where he began working in the lumber industry until 1984, eventually working as Maintenance Supervisor until his retirement. Jimmy was a long time “good standing” Lumber Workers Union Member.

Jimmy loved watching football and coaching his son’s Little League Baseball teams, he was the Boy Scouts of America, Pack 62, Scout Master and was heavily involved in Sno-King Hockey Association for many years with his two boys; he even helped coached the very first girl’s hockey team in Seattle in the mid-1970 with his close friend Bud Clay. Jimmy loved to barbeque for his family and all of their friends where everyone was always welcomed. He loved Christmas time decorating his tree each year with his five grandchildren. Jimmy also had a love for airplanes and had a great fondness for the old propeller aircraft; and in mid-1990 he fulfilled a dream of flying a WWII T-6 Texan warbird.

Jimmy is survived by his best friend, love of his life, and wife of 57 years, Colleen. He, also, leaves behind his brother Billy (Becky) Poteet of Georgetown, Texas, two sons Kevin and Keith (Stacey), and five grandchildren; Justin, Jacob, Makenzie, Bethany and Madison.

A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held March 18, 2016 at 1:00pm at Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, Washington 98036, with a time of continued sharing and fellowship following over light refreshments.

The family extends a special “thank you” to Capt. Paul Rice of Fire District #1, a longtime family friend and his crew who responded to the initial call for help and treated him like a family member. The family also wants to recognize all of the great people from Evergreen Hospice for all the wonderful outstanding work they performed while Jimmy was going through his courageous battle.
