Barbara was born to Julius and Mable (Ableman) Matthiensen on December 2, 1929 in Fargo, North Dakota, where she grew up with an older brother and sister.
In 1950 she married Walter W. (Bud) Petersen of Buffalo, North Dakota. Two children were born here, Karen and Mark, before the family packed it up and moved to Seattle, Washington in 1952. Therein followed two more children, Judy and Gary.
Barbara was a wonderful stay-at-home mom – lots of home-made cookies and kool-aid on hot summer days out under the big tree in the front yard. She eventually got her driver’s license so she could chauffeur her kids to all their various activities as well as managing a short stint as an Avon saleswoman.
Barbara is survived by her children: Karen (John Morris) Petersen, Mark Petersen, Judy Wilson, and Gary (Karen Baker) Petersen; grandchildren – Joshua Wilson , Benjamin (Megan Mauck) Wilson, Anthony Petersen (Katie Olsen), Kelsey (Brian) Creeley, and Jill Morris (Chris Elizaga); two great-grandchildren –Aiden Wilson and Henry Petersen; a brother, George (Phyllis) Matthiensen of Fargo, N.D; and several nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her parents; husband; grandson, Kyle Asplund; daughter-in-law Jane Petersen; son-in-law Jim Wilson; and sister, Rose Ohnstad.
