Walter T. "Ted" Brown

Born in Salvage, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah (Oldford) Brown. He attended Lynn English High School. Walter served his country proudly in World War II as a Tech. Sgt. in the U.S. Army 262nd Infantry 66th Division, Company F. He was a survivor of the SS Leopoldville disaster on December 24, 1944, when it was sunk by a German submarine crossing the English Channel on their way to the Battle of the Bulge. Of the 2200 men on board, 802 men died and 650 were injured.

After his service to his country, he worked for Lisson-Melon Co. for a number of years before going to tech school to learn the machinist trade. He worked at General Products & Gear in Lynn as a foreman for many years and then Goral Machine in Rowley until his retirement. Ted was a member of St. Stephen’s Memorial Episcopal Church and the VFW Post #9146 in Cohasset. He was well known in Lynn as a speaker during Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day Ceremonies, most recently at Classical High School in November of last year. He loved to play solitaire and was an avid sports fan.

In addition to his wife with whom he shared 71 years of marriage, he is survived by his children, Walter T. Brown, Jr. of Ossipee, NH and Barbara McHugh of Groveland; five grandchildren, Walter T. Brown III, Bryan Douglas, Kristie (Douglas) Bauters, David Brown and Karyn McHugh; six great grandchildren, Ashliey Wasson, Kyle Linck, Kara Linck, Devin Douglas, David Bauters and Cindy Bauters. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his daughter, Wendy (Douglas) McNaughton and six siblings, Martin Brown, Frederick Brown, Nigel Brown, Mary Manuel, Edith Collins and Mildred Nielson.

Walter’s Memorial Service will be held in the CUFFE-MCGINN FUNERAL HOME, 157 Maple St. Lynn on Thursday at 1:00PM. Relatives and friends invited. Visitation will precede the Service from 11:00AM-1:00PM. Burial will be in the World War II Veteran’s Section of Pine Grove Cemetery. Walter was an avid fundraiser for the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC and raised many thousands of dollars for the building of this memorial. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made to Friends of the National World War II Memorial, 921 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, Suite 304, Washington, DC or to the Salvation Army, 1 Franklin St. Lynn, MA 01902.
